camera obscura

Camera Obscura, CairnGorm – a timber building that traces an existing footpath within an established mountain garden as a form of ‘architectural cartography’. The intention was to provide a heightened experience of the garden and surrounding natural landscape through a path based design. This re-defined path and destination within a constructed landscape establishes a place at which the mountain garden ends and visual and spatial connections towards the vast and varied panoramic views begin. In contrast to the open-ended (day)light passageway defined by the building a side ‘dark chamber’ provides a place to view the camera obscura at work as the lens rotates to reflect and present images of the mountainous outer world; a counterpoint to Geddes’s urban Outlook Tower.
